Senior Advocate Milind Sathe has been appointed as the new Advocate General (AG) of Maharashtra and will assume office from Monday, December 8. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on X (formerly Twitter), confirming that the State Cabinet had cleared Sathe’s appointment.
In the official statement, the Chief Minister highlighted Sathe’s vast legal experience, noting that he has represented the State Government in several significant matters before both the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court. Sathe has also authored numerous pieces on legal issues, earning recognition within the legal fraternity. The Cabinet extended its congratulations to him upon approving his appointment.
Cabinet Accepts Resignation of Former AG Dr. Birendra Saraf
Alongside the announcement, the Chief Minister’s Office confirmed that the Cabinet has formally accepted the resignation of former Advocate General Dr. Birendra Saraf. Saraf had resigned in September citing personal reasons after serving for three years. Although the Chief Minister had requested him to continue until December 2025 to ensure a smooth transition, the State has now completed the appointment process with Sathe’s selection.
A Veteran of the Bar
With a legal career spanning over four decades, Sathe joined the Bar in 1982 and has primarily practiced on the civil and original side of the Bombay High Court, while also representing various matters before the Supreme Court. He has appeared for the State Government as well as major public bodies including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), MHADA, MMRDA, and the State Pollution Control Board.
Sathe was designated a Senior Advocate in 2005 and has served as President of the Bombay Bar Association for seven years. His appointment marks the return of an experienced hand to one of the State’s most crucial legal positions.
