The Supreme Court has issued an administrative circular prohibiting the chewing of pan masala, gutka, tobacco and similar substances within its premises. The Court has also directed that no person shall spit residue anywhere inside the court complex.
The Administrative General Branch released the circular on February 11, 2026. The circular notes that some building users chew pan masala, gutka and tobacco and spit the residue in wall corners, washbasins and near drinking water facilities.
The Court observed that such acts block water systems and create health hazards. It warned that the practice may lead to infections and causes inconvenience to other occupants.
The circular directs all concerned to refrain from chewing pan masala, gutka, tobacco or similar substances within the premises. It also calls upon everyone to cooperate in maintaining hygiene and cleanliness across the Supreme Court complex.
The Assistant Registrar (AG) signed the circular and marked it to “All Concerned.”
Through this directive, the Court aims to ensure proper upkeep and sanitary conditions within the Supreme Court building.
