The Sonam Wangchuk medical monitoring Delhi High Court order directs the Centre and Delhi government to conduct daily medical evaluations of the fasting activist. A Division Bench led by Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya issued the direction to protect Wangchuk’s health during his indefinite hunger strike.
Court Directs Regular Medical Assessments
The Delhi High Court on Thursday instructed authorities to ensure continuous health monitoring of Sonam Wangchuk. The Bench, comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia, stressed that authorities must take every possible step to safeguard human life.
The court passed the order after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured the Bench that government doctors were regularly checking Wangchuk’s condition. He also confirmed that medical teams would provide necessary treatment based on their findings.
Government Assures Medical Support
Representing the Union and Delhi governments, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that doctors were closely tracking Wangchuk’s health. He stated that officials would maintain medical records and take immediate action if his condition worsened.
The Bench acknowledged the government’s response and highlighted the responsibility of authorities to protect citizens’ lives. The court directed officials to continue daily medical supervision without interruption.
Background of the PIL
Advocate Rakesh Kumar Saini filed the Public Interest Litigation seeking protection for Wangchuk, who is observing an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
The activist began his fast on June 28. His protest demands accountability over alleged irregularities and question paper leaks in the education system. The demonstration is also linked with protests led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which has raised concerns about media freedom, institutional accountability, and youth unemployment.
Plea Raises Health Concerns
The petitioner requested the court to direct authorities to shift Wangchuk to a medical facility and provide necessary nutritional support. The plea claimed that Wangchuk had lost around 8.5 kilograms and that his health faced serious risks due to the prolonged fast.
The petitioner argued that providing essential vitamins, minerals, and liquid nutrition was necessary to protect his life. The plea urged the court to intervene and ensure immediate medical care.
Court Seeks Medical Records
During the hearing, the Bench asked about the availability of Wangchuk’s medical reports. Solicitor General Mehta informed the court that doctors record details whenever Wangchuk agrees to medical examinations.
He added that private doctors had also examined the activist on some occasions. The court directed authorities to maintain proper medical documentation and continue regular health assessments.
The Sonam Wangchuk medical monitoring Delhi High Court directive aims to ensure that authorities closely track his condition and provide timely medical assistance during the ongoing hunger strike.
