The Rajasthan High Court Jagan Gurjar death case has prompted the High Court to take suo motu cognizance of the custodial death of dacoit Jagan Gurjar at Ajmer Central Jail. The Court has sought detailed reports from the State Government, the High Court administration, and the Amicus Curiae. It also directed the authorities to explain the circumstances surrounding the incident and the functioning of the prison’s surveillance system.
A Division Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma and Justice Maneesh Sharma passed the directions in Suo Motu v. State of Rajasthan. The Bench listed the matter for further hearing on July 28, 2026.
Background of the Case
According to the material placed before the Court, Jagan Gurjar died under suspicious circumstances while lodged in Ajmer Central Jail. The incident prompted the High Court to initiate suo motu proceedings while monitoring issues related to prison administration and jail conditions.
The Bench considered it necessary to examine the circumstances leading to the custodial death. It also decided to review concerns regarding prison surveillance and overall jail administration.
Court Seeks Reports from Authorities
During the hearing, the Additional Advocate General informed the Bench that the State would submit a current status report on jail administration.
The Court directed counsel representing the High Court administration to submit a report explaining the recent incident at Ajmer Central Jail. The report must address allegations that CCTV cameras were either inoperative or produced hazy footage. It must also explain why the officer responsible for monitoring the surveillance system failed to report the issue.
The Bench also directed the Amicus Curiae to submit a copy of the inspection report prepared after personally examining different aspects of prison administration. The State will file its response after receiving the report.
Court Records Its Observations
Recording the submissions, the Division Bench observed:
“Learned Additional Advocate General submits that he shall file a current status report relating to the jail administration. Learned counsel appearing for the High Court shall also place the report relating to the incident which has occurred recently at the Central Jail at Ajmer and as to how the cameras have been found to be inoperative/or hazy and why the concerned Officer who is required to keep a vigil on the cameras did not report about the said incident. The Amicus Curiae shall also submit a copy of the report which he has prepared after personally inspecting the various stages and learned Additional Advocate General shall submit his response.”
