Supreme Court Steps In After Advocate Reports Assault Within Court Premises
A lawyer has alleged that a group of goons attacked him inside the Tis Hazari Court complex in Delhi, even as court proceedings were underway. The incident has triggered serious concerns over the safety of advocates and the sanctity of court premises.
Taking note of the allegation, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) assured immediate action and made it clear that the judiciary will not tolerate any form of “gunda raj” within court complexes.
Alleged Assault Took Place Before Judge, Lawyer Claims
According to the complainant, the attack occurred in the presence of a judge, raising alarming questions about security arrangements inside one of Delhi’s busiest district courts.
The lawyer alleged that the assailants acted with impunity and attempted to intimidate him through violence. He further claimed that such incidents reflect a growing pattern of unchecked lawlessness within court premises.
CJI Assures Strong Action, Emphasises Rule of Law
Responding to the allegations, the Chief Justice of India strongly condemned any form of violence in courts. The CJI assured that strict action would follow after verification of facts, stating that courts cannot function if fear and intimidation replace the rule of law.
The apex court reiterated that court premises must remain zones of safety, where advocates and litigants can discharge their duties without threat or coercion.
Judicial Concern Over Safety of Lawyers
Legal observers note that the incident highlights a deepening crisis around advocate safety, particularly in overcrowded district courts. Repeated instances of violence, intimidation, and unauthorised interference threaten the independence of the legal profession.
Senior members of the Bar have called for enhanced security protocols, accountability mechanisms, and zero tolerance for criminal elements within court campuses.
Legal Significance of the Incident
The episode underscores a critical constitutional principle — access to justice requires a secure and fearless environment. Violence inside court premises not only undermines individual safety but also erodes public confidence in the justice delivery system.
The CJI’s firm stance signals that the judiciary views such incidents as an institutional threat, not merely isolated criminal acts.
What Lies Ahead
Authorities are expected to verify the allegations and initiate appropriate action against those involved. The incident may also prompt systemic reforms in court security, especially in high-footfall district courts like Tis Hazari. The legal fraternity awaits concrete measures to ensure that courts remain spaces governed by law, not intimidation
