CJI Surya Kant Issues Stern Warning Against “Misbehaving” During Mentioning Round

Date:

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant on Monday sharply reprimanded advocate Mathews Nedumpara during the mentioning round. The CJI cautioned him against what the Court called reckless submissions. He also warned that strict action would follow if the conduct continued.

Nedumpara sought urgent mentioning of a petition. He said the plea challenges the collegium system and seeks restoration of the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC). The CJI, however, said the Registry showed no such petition as pending.

Tensions rose after Nedumpara said Constitution Benches were being formed for “Adani and Ambani”, while matters affecting the common man were not being heard. The Bench reacted strongly.

In open court, CJI Surya Kant issued a direct warning:

“Mr. Nedumpara, be careful with what you submit in my court. You have seen me in Chandigarh, in Delhi.. I am warning you, be careful. Don’t think you will be able to continue misbehaving as you have been doing with other benches. I am warning you.”

The report also notes that in 2024, the Supreme Court Registry refused to register Nedumpara’s NJAC-related petition. The Registry said a fresh writ petition was not maintainable on an issue already decided in the NJAC verdict.

It further records that last year, then CJI Sanjiv Khanna also admonished Nedumpara when he sought listing. CJI Khanna told him: “Don’t make a political speech in the Court.”
