Bombay HC Notice on LPG Supply Plea

Date:

The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court on Thursday issued notice to the Union government, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, and Confidence Petroleum India Limited on a plea by six LPG distributors over the shortage of domestic cooking gas cylinders.

A bench of Justice Anil S. Kilor and Justice Raj D. Wakode heard the plea. The six distributors are associated with Confidence Petroleum India Limited. They asked the Court to direct the company to increase the supply of household LPG cylinders. The Court will hear the matter again on Monday.

Till then, the Court said the storage and supply of domestic LPG cylinders must strictly follow the Government’s policy.

The petitioners said the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas had already issued policy directions giving priority to LPG supply for domestic consumers. However, they argued that the company did not increase the supply of household cylinders.

They also said they had repeatedly asked the company to stop LPG exports and increase supply in the domestic market. According to them, the company did not act on those representations.

The plea said the Iran–Israel conflict disrupted global crude supply. It also affected the movement of oil from countries such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Syria. The petitioners said this led to limits on LPG production.

In view of this situation, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas issued orders to give priority to LPG production and supply for domestic consumers, the petition said.

Advocates Shyam Dewani and Saahil Dewani appeared for the distributors.
