A court in Bahraich has delivered a landmark verdict in the high-profile murder case stemming from the 2024 Bahraich-Maharajganj communal violence. On Thursday, Additional District & Sessions Judge Pawan Kumar Sharma awarded the death penalty to the principal accused, Sarfaraz alias Rinku, and life imprisonment to nine co-accused for the brutal killing of Ram Gopal Mishra during clashes that erupted last year.
The violence broke out on October 13, 2024, during a Durga idol immersion procession in the Maharajganj area of Bahraich, which led to widespread unrest across the district. Mishra, aged in his early twenties, was shot and subjected to extreme violence in an attack that the court described as “demonic torture” under which humanity groaned.”
In its judgment, the court referred to the incident as an exceptionally heinous crime, justifying the imposition of the harshest punishment on the main accused. The nine others were convicted on various charges related to the murder and ensuing communal clashes, drawing rigorous life sentences.
The trial saw evidence presented by the prosecution, including eyewitness testimonies and forensic reports, establishing the involvement of the convicted individuals. The sentencing order emphasised the serious disruption to public order and social harmony caused by the violence.
This verdict, delivered nearly 14 months after the incident, marks a decisive moment in one of the most sensitive communal violence cases in the region’s recent history.
