A Fast-Track Court in Bihar’s Araria district has sentenced a woman to death for murdering her eight-year-old daughter, holding the crime to be driven by the woman’s attempt to conceal her alleged extramarital relationship. The verdict delivered, categorised the offence as one of the “rarest of rare” cases.
According to the prosecution, the woman strangled her daughter after the child reportedly witnessed her in a compromising situation with another man. Fearing that the girl might reveal the incident to others including her husband the woman carried out the murder in an attempt to hide her affair.
During the trial, the court examined eyewitness statements, forensic reports, and other circumstantial evidence, concluding that the killing was premeditated and committed with extreme cruelty. The judge observed that the mother violated the trust and responsibility inherent in the parent-child relationship, making the act particularly condemnable.
Legal experts note that death sentences for women in India are extremely rare, making this ruling significant. The defence is expected to appeal the decision before a higher court.
